Catching Up with Fátima Moreno

We met Fátima Moreno at her studio in a legendary building of Bairro Alto, soaking up the sun and drawing with leftover squid ink from the previous evening’s dinner-party.

Born in Granada sometime in the 1980s, for this thoroughbred Iberian, moving to Lisbon was a liberation — having previously operated as a graphic designer and as a art director in advertising — her move to our city has triggered the emancipation of an extraordinary visual artist.

“to arrive rather late at a new practice has allowed for great freedom as I had never thought of myself as an artist — never dealt with that expectation for myself — and so I felt I could develop towards so many directions within that territory, that there were endless possibilities, and realised that the borderlines for one’s expansion are a personal construct: I am in control of my boundaries.”

Moreno’s drawings and paintings present a world that is as familiar as it is grotesque. It is playfully naïf yet affirmatively seductive, much like the artist herself and the city she has taken as her own — ¡Olé!”
